Two key issues in the design and development of expert systems for maintenance training are the choice of an appropriate expert model and the function of the expert in instruction. We are confronting these issues in instructional research involving the design of an expert instructional system for automotive electrical troubleshooting. In studying expert troubleshooters and in examining troubleshooting procedures used in the military, we have encountered three distinctly different types of expertise. Each of these requires different forms of knowledge and produces qualitatively different troubleshooting behaviors. One kind of expert has established a large repertoire of symptom-fault associations through extensive experience in troubleshooting. Another kind of mechanic utilizes fixed troubleshooting procedures from shop manuals and various maintenance aids.
