Using the Roman province of Macedonia as an example, this work presents a critical analysis of the generally held opinion among social historians that the society of the Roman Empire was based on a class system. An analysis of the sources, mostly inscriptions, reveals that a€“ in contrast to the situation elsewhere in the Empire a€“ here there is no evidence for a class-based elite, and that more attention must be paid to regional variations in the structure of society than has been the case.Using the Roman province of Macedonia as an example, this work presents a critical analysis of the generally held opinion among social historians that the society of the Roman Empire was based on a class system.
